Backyard Stay-Cations
Over the past couple years, we’ve been thinking more about the art of the Stay-cation, and how we can bring rest and relaxation home to our own backyards. The concept of the “Stay-cation” isn’t new (though the pun might be) but its meaning as it pertains to the home landscape has changed in recent years. The Outdoor Living movement has transformed even the smallest backyard into an indispensable part of the home, opening up infinite potential for private retreats. When your own backyard is designed specifically for your rest and relaxation, staying at home doesn’t sound so shabby.
Your Retreat, Your Way
So what’s the key to a stay-cation-worthy yard? Like your favorite travel destinations, your home retreat should be unique to you. Consider the elements you personally would seek in a vacation – Sunbathing? Play? Adventure? (Of course, dolphins and skiing are probably out, but there may be more of your vacation that you can bring home than you think.) For relaxation, a daybed, hammock, or garden nook with a bench is easily done. A fountain or windchimes provides instant calm. Add a few of your favorite flowers and you could be virtually whisked away.
Bringing It Home
Bringing the vacation vibe to your backyard may require thinking outside the box. One client wanted relaxation to be a highlight of their resort-like backyard. Because of that, we included row of poolside loungers, a firepit and an oversized pool. We firmly believe that backyard relaxation is not just for kids. We also integrated pink roses, and matching furniture, towels and umbrellas to make sure it gave the feel of their favorite vacation spot.
(How could anyone resist? S’mores in that firepit, now please!)
Spirit Of Adventure
Some of us are more adventurous than others. If hanging out at home is hard on the thrill-seekers in your life, explore the adventures possible in your backyard. If you or your kids love to camp, pitch a tent on the lawn and roast marshmallows over a fire. Have you ever wanted to learn to slackline? This could be your moment! When the Montgomery kids were little, a favorite Spring adventure was playing outside in the rain. Nothing was more exciting than running barefoot in the grass and squelching in the mud. If it rains this week, you will probably find us all outside, squelching away. We believe it’s good for your health, and definitely good for the soul.
Montgomery Robbins has long been a work-from-home environment, offering interactive remote consultations to clients across the nation.
