Trendspotting 2021

We won’t be the first to express excitement about leaving 2020 behind.  There’s really no need to elaborate… we’re singing ‘Auld Lang Syne’ for the days when we could see our favorite people in person.  But this New Year’s our hope for the future is strong.  We thought we’d start off this year, as is tradition, with a peek at some of 2021’s trending styles in Landscape Architecture and Interior Design.

Trending Colors Of The Year

Pantone, the fabulous color officials who follow trends in the design world, have picked not one but two colors for 2021- ‘Ultimate Gray’ and ‘Illuminating.’  These colors are simultaneously elegant, modern, warm, and forward thinking.  We have been seeing a dominance in these colors and similar shades in trending hardscape, tile and paint colors in the past year.  It makes us think of contemporary landscape lighting on bluestone pavers, poured-in-place concrete countertops with buttercream stone veneer and gold tile accents, lemon cream pie on a stoneware plate… Yes, please.

Illuminated Bluestone steps show off this year’s trending colors in style.  Innovations in LED landscape lighting have also changed the way we experience illumination in the landscape.  The warm, lemony hue of Pantone’s color choice captures this perfectly.

Air and Light

We could all use a breath of fresh air.  Trending for years now is the ever-elegant indoor-outdoor living space, allowing air and light to enter while maintaining all the comforts of an indoor room.  A favorite J.Montgomery addition to cabañas, sunrooms and pool houses is NanaWall system’s folding glass walls and windows.  Allowing an entire wall to open up to the air, these accordion glass panels also close seamlessly to protect the interior from the elements.  Every year they get more elegant, and we find ourselves incorporating them into our new designs in myriad ways.

Speaking of glass in the landscape, glass is at the top of the list right now for new hardscape additions.  Whether it’s a glass-paneled roof deck railing, heat-proof glass fireplace or an ultra-cool glass spa feature, the minimalist and airy feel of glass is a trend that’s sure to continue for many years to come.

Organic Meets Luxe

We love adding details in every facet of the landscape – Just that hint of something special, unique, or hand-made.  So when we heard ‘Rustic Vogue’ and ‘Arts and Crafts Revival’ mentioned as potential trending styles for 2021, we got much too excited!  While neomodern design is often at the forefront of Landscape Architecture, it seems that handmade and rustic materials and metals, earthy textures and luxe patterns are making a comeback.  Something about combining these personalized touches with the minimalist aesthetic is in our minds extra elegant.  We love it!
